The 13th Documentary Movie Guide | Questions | Worksheet (TVMA - 2016) challenges students to digest and analyze the incredible story this films tells about the 13th amendment, the war on drugs, mass incarceration and the prison-industrial complex. Explore the impact that Nixon, Reagan and Clinton had on the war on drugs and how companies profited off legislation which ALEC had a part in introducing. Ask students to ponder how technology like camera phones are affecting the Black Lives Matters movement and what it means for all citizens. Finally, ask students to come up with their own solutions to some of the problems outlined in the film.

This 1984 Movie Viewing Guide | Questions | Worksheet | Google Slides (R - 1984) helps students analyze the film version of George Orwell’s 1984 dystopian novel. Discuss and explore multiple complex multilayered scenes. Draw conclusions from the film and compare this fictional society to modern day society.
Note: This movie is rated R, use caution when showing to students. I’d recommend previewing the movie, marking the times that you’d wish to skip and then pausing and skipping the sections that contain violence and nudity.

This Thirteen Days Movie Guide | Cuban Missile Crisis | JFK | Cold War (PG13 - 2000) challenges students analyze the portrayal of JFK’s team, their differing perspectives, and their efforts to avoid conflict. Investigate the significance of Adlai’s role as the UN spokesperson and the implications of believing Fomin as a representative of Khrushchev. Examine the potential consequences of trading missiles in Turkey for missiles in Cuba and the importance of the timeline for missile removal. Think like a director and discuss what effect the black and white scenes have on the viewer. Finally, research contemporary events with differing opinions on military force and diplomatic solutions and compare them to the Cuban Missile Crisis.

This Brave New World Movie Guide | Worksheet | Questions | Google Slides (TV - 1998) is designed to help students create a deeper understanding of Aldous Huxley’s famous dystopian civilization. Compare how kids are raised in the ‘civilization’ to how kids are raised today. Explore the concepts of pain, conditioning and promiscuity as virtue. Finally identify the effects of ‘soma’ on the civilization and possible replacements for ‘soma’ today.
Please take note that this is the 1998 TV version of the film. I’d strongly advise checking out the IMDb parental guide for Brave New World before viewing. Although this film is unrated, and was made for TV, it has various scenes depicting nudity and sexual behavior.

Think critically about concepts such as labor rights and environmental movements, boycotting, self-love and revolution, sacrifice and the importance of acknowledging and remembering Dolores. Finally, challenge students to write a 60 second speech as Dolores to persuade people to join the grape boycott using what they learned from the film.

This Walkout Movie Guide | Questions | Worksheet (TV14 - 2006) challenges students to think critically about the characters and concepts in this inspirational story about equal education for all. Ask students to analyze the kinds of improvements Paula and the other student leaders fought for and how they were successful. Encourage students to think about what they might take for granted and how they would try to achieve a positive change for something they feel is unfair.
Note: As a bonus, question #8 asks students to compare real footage of the 1968 walkout with the scene from the film. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington Movie Guide | Questions | Worksheet (1939) challenges students to analyze government, corruption, how a bill gets passed and the importance of liberty, free speech and the freedom of the press. Although this movie is almost 80 years it is amazing that the director Frank Capra, and the writers were able to create something that is still capture’s students attention and is highly educational.
Note: The final essay question requires background knowledge of Don Quixote or a brief reading of a summary of the the story, as students are asked to compare Mr. Smith to Don Quixote. This question can be skipped if desired.
